Quilts for Kids

For lent this year I didn't want to give anything up. Everything I thought about giving up was something selfish...junk foods and coke and things I really love. Well, giving these up would really be a good thing (especially with boating season soon upon us!) So instead of giving up something I wanted to DO something. At my last Modern Quilt Guild meeting I learned of the Quilts for Kids Challenge. There it was...something I could do to help children, perfect! I signed up and my first kit came today. It is a wonderful program. Once you sign up you will receive a quilt kit. (I got mine in less than a week) The fabric is all super cute and precut to make a simple pattern. They supply everything except the batting. After it's all finished you mail it back. After it is returned they will send you a new kit!

A Quilt for Mamaa

I finished Mamaa's quilt late last night...just in time to take it to my Modern Guild Meeting today! I made this quilt with a simple 9 patch block without using a pattern. The only "guidelines" I made for myself was the alternating cream squares. Other than that I just grabbed the prints at random not worrying if two of the same were too close. I'm glad I did it that way, it gave an organized randomness feel to it. I just made a crazy little block for the back and embroidered it for her.
Well, I need to go make my doggie place mats with my Anna Maria Oilcloth before the dogs ruin my new hardwood floors!

Heart Day

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope everyone gets to spend a wonderful day with the ones they love.

Lucky me, I had these beautiful flowers on my nightstand to wake up to and a day full of food, hanging out on the couch watching TV with the hubby and ordering fabrics. Sounds like a good Valentine's Day to me!

Pretty Plumes

It came! It came! It came! Nothing more exciting than getting pretty, bright fabric in the mail on a cold and rainy day. I won a bid on ebay for four charm packs of Tula Pink's Plume line. It is FABULOUS!

I love every fabric in this line but the top four are Aqua Key, Hot Pink Plumes, Brown Fleur De Lis, and the bird print {can't find the name}. Now to figure out how I'm going to piece these lovely charm packs together..........

......can't wait to get my camera back instead of using my phone......

Valentine Wreath

While my house is completely torn apart to get the new floors in I had to find something that wouldn't take a lot of space to busy myself with. I came across this fabulous idea over at The Idea Room .

It was a very simple and fun project. All you need is a Styrofoam heart (I found mine at Hobby Lobby) and some red felt and straight pins.
Cut circles out of the red felt. I had a little under 3/4 yard felt and I just made circles, using a plastic cup template, until the felt was done. {I had a few left over and I'm thinking of making a Valentines pin for my jacket}

Now all that's left to do is fold your circles in half and then half again to make "rose petal" looking things.

Stick a straight pin through the point {making sure all layers of felt were on the pin} and cover your heart. You won't need to cover the back since it will be hanging and you want it to hang flat. However, you will need to cover the sides and inside well so that no white is showing.

When I was all finished I pinned a silk ribbon on for a hanger and hung it on the wall. Amy over at The Idea Room has also made a beautiful topiary and hanging balls with this same technique. This may be the extent of my Valentines project this year due to the huge mess in my house. Not only can I not get to my machine, I also have no where to work! What a shame, I had plans for some really cute dish towels.......

Craziness

The craziness around here continues.....we are in the middle of reflooring the main level of our house. The kitchen is pretty much complete but the appliances that were to be delivered today weren't {they will be here in the morning!} Now it's time to rip up the studio aka the dining room and the living room. Somehow through all of this I did get a quilt top finished and ready for sandwiching. Pictures soon to follow since the camera is at the hubby's office! Be back later...off to move furniture!

I Guess I'm a Blogger?!?

Well, hello! I have been reading blogs written by some very talented and inspiring people and have gotten the bug to create my own! So a little about me....
My mom is a very creative person. She is an artist, interior designer, jewelry maker, sewer, fabulous mom and wonderful lady who is naturally my first inspiration! Two years ago for Christmas I got my (own!) first sewing machine. Just a little guy, nothing fancy, but perfect for starting out. A year later I used that little Singer to piece together my first quilt top...super fun. Not knowing where to go from there I put it aside to piece together some more (3) quilt tops. I was unsure on how my sleepy machine would quilt these quilts so I used my trusty ol'hands and hand quilted the three quilts to give as Christmas gifts to family.

Avalon Quilt from Material Obsessions. The green and black ones were modified from a "Wickedly Easy Quilt" pattern.

Then this Christmas the hubby got me a fabulous Brother Sewing and Embroidery machine and it is amazing. Thanks to this machine I was confident enough to machine quilt that first quilt top that was set aside over a year ago! An evening later.....

Brick Path

And that catches you up! I have a lot more ideas and plans that I am really excited about and can't wait to share with you...but for now I'm out.....things need to get done before bed!
